Matthew Freeman is a Brooklyn based playwright with a BFA from Emerson College. His plays include THE DEATH OF KING ARTHUR, REASONS FOR MOVING, THE GREAT ESCAPE, THE AMERICANS, THE WHITE SWALLOW, AN INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR, THE MOST WONDERFUL LOVE, WHEN IS A CLOCK, GLEE CLUB, THAT OLD SOFT SHOE and BRANDYWINE DISTILLERY FIRE.One of the most common romantic fantasies that men and women in this country tend to have is to date an actor. The men all want an Angelina Jolie, and all the women want a Brad Pitt.To be fair, articles like the aforementioned are really just a part of the perpetual random content generator necessary to run sites that are all about ad sales and traffic. I know that you want to read these little goddamn lists and chuckle to your impressive self about the foibles of others bipeds. Did it take up time that you intended to use watching The Bachelor? The same thing is happening just two apartments down. If Your Actor is in a play, and you don't like the play, it is not Your Actor's fault. So, with an eye on content that leads to traffic, and also an eye on your endless need for simple advice, and an eye on the mirror (always) I shall provide you with... You know what people like (even people who aren't constantly judged on their looks and way of speaking)? Before you met Your Actor on Match.com, maybe you never trucked your ass out to a black box theater far out on the elevated train to see people in all-white clothes enact Medea with no budget. Maybe, even, seeing that particular version of Medea gives you a goddamned headache. Your Actor, though, did not write Medea or direct himself or herself to put on the duck mask and would also probably prefer to be in the latest Tony Kushner in Minneapolis. He served as Assistant Producer and Senior Writer for the live webcast from Times Square on New Year's Eve 2010-2012.
We’re sensitive artists and there are a few things we need you to understand and do for us in order for our relationship to be truly fulfilling. When you’re telling people what we do, we want you to say, “He’s an actor,” not, “He’s a server/office temp, etc.” We’re one audition away from a booking that could change both of our lives forever. Not only will it give us a loving foundation to plant our feet on, it will give us an advantage over everyone else out there who is at it alone. We really wanted to go to that thing with you, but we have an audition tomorrow and we have to stay in and prep. It doesn’t matter if it is a one-line co-star role or a series lead on a network show. Once our system is nailed down, we’ll become a booking machine.4. And then we’re going to blow some auditions so badly that it’s going to really bother us. As much as we try to be Zen about the whole thing, at the end of the day, our bodies are our instruments, they get used in wacky ways, and we can get messy.Actors are told “no” on a consistent basis and are judged on way more than just their talent. No wonder they break their backs playing other people.Explaining she once dated someone in the business while she was at drama school, the Zero Dark Thirty star explained the thought of being in a relationship with someone else in the public eye 'freaks' her out.'I have dated an actor before, at Juilliard [drama school], but since then, I’ve only been on a couple of dates with one and I was so freaked out someone was going to take a picture of us, because they were famous.
